Samba Dance Workshop at the Chelsea Studios.

Samba New York is proud to sponsor a new Beginner Samba Dance course (both women and men are welcomed) with instructor Danielle Lima.

This unique workshop was designed to teach people of all skill levels the joyful art of samba dance. The first edition of the course will be taught by top samba dancer and teacher, Danielle Lima, and will focus on the solo samba style typical of the famous Rio de Janeiro Carnaval.

The class starts with a gentle warm-up that exercises basic isolation, a slow stretching routine oriented to improve flexibility and balance of the body. Afterwards, Danielle Lima will introduce samba no pé (solo samba) and some basic Brazilian dance steps.

Highlights for each day:

May 1: Samba no pé (footwork)
May 8: Samba no pé, adding hip movements
May 15: Beginning choreography and styling
May 29: Review all the steps and free style. After the class there will be a social dance party.

Danielle Lima

Instructor, Danielle Lima was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She started dancing at the age of seven at the Dance School Center, where she studied ballet, jazz, tap, modern, national and international folkloric dance. At the time, Danielle was a part of Beija-Flor de Nilópolis, one of the largest and most famous samba schools of Rio, where she performed for several years. Danielle appeared in numerous television shows in Brazil such as Xuxa and Domingão do Faustão. While in Brazil, she performed with the Rio Dance Company in the Opera O Guarani and was lead dancer for the Rodry Baiano Dance Group, a folkloric dance company. In the year 2000, Danielle joined the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, where she worked with choreographer Tony Stevens for over three years. Later, Danielle relocated to New York City, where she has taught at the Harlem YMCA and Djoniba Dance & Drum Center. In 2005, she founded the Brasileirando Dance Group, a company that disseminates Brazilian folkloric and contemporary dances. Danielle is one of the Teaching Artists of the program, Dancing Classrooms, from American Ballroom Theater. She also teaches at the Arte Capoeira Center and is one of the principal dancers for Samba New York! Danielle’s creative choreographic approach for teaching includes a mixture of fitness and traditional and contemporary samba from Rio and Bahia.

The Course fee is due in full at the first class and is nonrefundable. Any class in the Course that may have to be canceled by Samba New York! will be rescheduled with a make-up class. No credits will be granted for missed classes.
