Conference “Brazil and the Future, Knowledge, Investment and Infrastructure”, at Columbia University

With opening remarks by Prof. John H. Coatsworth, the Dean of School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, this one-day conference will discuss several issues dealing with contemporary Brazil, as well as “the knowledge, investment and infrastructure factors that will shape its future.” Thomas Trebat, Executive Director of the Institute for Latin American Studies and the Center for Brazilian Studies, will host and moderate the event which will feature speakers from Brazil representing a variety of backgrounds and expertise.

  1. “Economic Growth and Education in Brazil,” Prof. Aloisio Araujo, Fundacao Getulio Vargas and Visiting Professor, Columbia University.
  2. “Brazil`s Road to a Business-Friendly Regulatory Environment”: Marcello Hallake, Founding Director of the Brazil Foundation and a Partner at Thompson & Knight.
  3. “Brazil as an Emerging Player in Science and Medicine”: Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, MD.
  4. “Brazil´s Idea of Regional Development from Gilberto Freyre to Today”, Gilberto Freyre Neto, President of the Gilberto Freyre Foundation.
  5. “Building a Knowledge-Based Society in Brazil”: Arnaldo Niskier, President of the Center for the Integration of Companies and Schools (Latin America´s largest NGO) and former President of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
  6. “Brazil and the Challenge of Infrastructure & Transportation”: Antonio Roberto Cortez, President of Volkswagen Buses & Trucks and CEO of MAN Latin America.
  7. “Brazil´s Economic Outlook: Challenges and Opportunities Ahead”: Claudio Frischtak, President of Inter B International Consulting and former Senior Economist of the World Bank.
  8. “Brazil as an Emerging Player in the Energy Sector”: Nelson Narciso, Director of Brazil´s National Oil Agency.
