Part of the series Cinema Tropical’s Music + Film Series: Janeiro in New York, the 92Y Tribaca located on 200 Hudson Street, in New York city, will be screening the influential samba documentary O Mistério do Samba (The Mystery of Samba) on Thursday, January 28, at 7pm.

Having premiered at the Museum of Modern art (MoMA) in New York City on the summer of 2008, when the film was part of the annual Premiere Brazil, The Mystery of Samba captures the rich lives—and astonishing vivacity—of a group of veteran musicians and composers from one of Rio’s most revered samba schools, Portela.”

The documentary features interviews with Marisa Monte, Paulinho da Viola and Zeca Pagodinho, among others, and it’s a major introduction to anyone interested in learning a bit more about the roots and the history of Samba music in Brazil.
