Directed by acclaimed theater director Nena Inoue, and written by Sueli Rocha (who also starts in this one-woman show), Glue Trap proves once again that the figure of the maid has risen to a starring role.

In this new show currently at the Axis Theatre, Ms Rocha weaves together eleven first-person, autobiographical stories from her 20-year life as a New York maid (or cleaning lady) into one portrayal of upper-class New York alienation and diasporal solitude.
Like many other immigrants, Rocha gave up a promising career in her native country for the guarantee of stable income in the United States. And after sacrifices were made and forgotten, this almost cathartic play offers a humorous, albeit darkly reflexive, look back at the skeletons Ms. Rocha had to leave behind – both in New York and in Brazil.
This play is also part of a recent wave of works focused on the figure of maids. Currently playing at the Angelika Film Center is the Chilean film The Maids. directed by Sebastian Silva. An extended review of both of these excellent works should be coming next week.
